Donald Davis
Donald Davis was born in a Southern Appalachian mountain world rich in stories, surrounded by a family of traditional storytellers who told him gentle fairy tales, simple and silly Jack tales, scary mountain lore, ancient Welsh and Scottish folktales, and most importantly, nourishing, true-to-life stories of his own neighbors and kin.
Featured at festivals throughout the U.S. and world, Davis is also known as a prolific author, producer of books and CDs, and a guest host for NPR’s Good Evening. Davis is a recipient of the NSN ORACLE Circle of Excellence and Lifetime Achievement awards.
Davis has become one of only a handful, okay two, storytellers to achieve permanent Featured Teller status at the National Storytelling Festival in Jonesbourgh, TN the first weekend in October. From his annual Pre-Festival performance before 2000 through the final olio Donald's shows are standing room only, SOLD OUT. The week prior to the festival Davis is always the Teller in Residence at the International Storytelling Center. Jonesbourgh may be the granddaddy of storytelling festivals however, any night or especially weekend you can find Donald appearing at a festival, telling at a library or event somewhere to Sold Out crowds. He is America's preeminent storyteller. Story and Donald Davis are synonymous.
“I could have listened all morning to Donald Davis . . . his stories often left listeners limp with laughter at the same time they struggled with a lump in the throat.” – New York Times
